Poet in Residence gigs & dates for 2024!
We are gassed to share news about an exciting series of dates for special events and showcases for our Poet in residence Surfing Sofas, following the epic release of his first album Objects and Concepts last year.
Produced with partners and album collaborators Lyrix Organix, Surfing Sofas will be embarking on some major dates to coincide with it’s release.
About the album
This vital concept album, released late last year and produced by acclaimed musicians Renell Shaw and Camilo Tirado delves deep into the invisible stories of the UK's homeless communities. Through the magic of poetry, music, and archive recordings, Surfing Sofas weaves a tapestry of nine tracks, each through the lens of nine objects from the museum's collection. The album is available on all major streaming platforms now.
Dates for this year
05 May, 2pm, Surfing Sofas x Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir
Surfing Sofas will be teaming up with the amazing Soul Sanctuary Choir in a creative collaboration under the theme of ‘Coming Home’. The choir is a London based gospel choir committed to creating contemporary gospel of the highest standard and the event will also feature an interview with Surfing Sofas and members of the Museum of Homelessness crew. 05-07 July, Love Supreme festival
Surfing Sofas will be appearing at the Love Supreme festival's Bands & Voices stage, a small but great venue of spoken word and music. Love Supreme is an three-day greenfield jazz music festival that has previously been headlined by jazz and soul luminaries like Little Simz and Erykah Badu. 08 August, 6-8pm, Unplugged: Objects & Concepts at the museum
An unplugged homecoming for Surfing Sofas as he stages a performance of his album Objects & Concepts at an intimate showcase night at the Museum of Homelessness in August. Tickets TBA
12-14 November, Keynote at the Joy of Museums: The Museums Association conference

About the album
As the first-ever poet in residence for the Museum of Homelessness, Surfing Sofas has created an album that guides us through each object, offering a raw and moving re-interpretation of their essential truths. His powerful storytelling, combining humor, poetry, and a dynamic soundtrack, echoes the styles of artists like George The Poet, Leonard Cohen, and Loyle Carner.
Surfing Sofas has taken 9 objects from our collection and delved deep into their meanings and remixed samples from each story into the tracks he has made. If you’d like to hear the full stories for each object you can find all the original object stories on our collection page.
