26 Jan: Explore the Creative Revival of Squatting with Established Beyond

Protestors with a red banner stating "GMHA: Our Homes are not Your Assets"

Throughout 2017, Museum of Homelessness has been presenting State of the Nation around the UK to ask the questions that matter about homelessness today.

In Liverpool and Manchester, homelessness has rarely been out of the headlines. Last year Andy Burnham pledged 15% of his salary to homelessness causes. In Liverpool, the council opened a rough sleeper shelter to offer help to all who need it – even those without recourse to public funds.

Some of the biggest stories to emerge recently focus on individual activists taking matters into their own hands to house people. In Manchester the squatting scene has exploded responding to a rise of nearly 1000% in street homelessness.

For State of the Nation Conversations, Established Beyond, a small media production team who have been collaborating with GMHA, will present an immersive documentary of the resurgence of Manchesters Squat Scene from the Cornerhouse and beyond. Expect art, poetry, film and music with a special Q&A to share skills from the grassroots activists.

As well as the session from GMHA ft. Established Beyond the event will offer an opportunity to hear from others about creative responses to the homelessness crisis including Liverpool based artist Tony Mallon who has worked with homeless communities in Liverpool for many years, artist Anthony Luvera whose work Frequently Asked Questions with formerly homeless artist Gerald McLaverty lifts the lid on how councils currently serve homeless people nationally.
